| Description | Founded in 1946, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society funds more research, offers more services for people with MS, and provides more professional education programs than any other MS organization in the world. Through its home office in New York and its 50-state network of chapters, the Society serves more than one million people annually. The Society is the largest private supporter of MS research in the world: for more than 55 years it has funded innovative research and advocated for government support of important scientific inquiries. Northern California is the epicenter of cutting-edge MS research. Currently, scientists at local universities receive millions in research grants from the National MS Society. At the Society’s Northern California Chapter, our emphasis is wellness . The Chapter is committed to the empowerment of people with MS, their families, friends, significant others, and all people affected by MS. We are committed to honoring and supporting the independence and self-sufficiency of people with MS by providing accurate and timely information, advocacy, material assistance, and emotional support. We are committed to dislodging prejudices, increasing understanding, and expanding the awareness of MS and issues of disability in ourselves and in other people. While visiting our site, please learn about our wide range of programs and services for families faced with MS. The Chapter was chartered in 1954, and presently has Three offices to serve you. We are the local resource for more than 10,000 people with MS in a 40-county area. The Chapter is governed by a local board of directors. We believe in a partnership between staff and volunteers, so our employees work closely with a network of people committed to fighting MS. The National MS Society is the only national voluntary MS organization that meets the standards of all major agencies that rate the fiscal responsibility of nonprofit groups.
